Family Therapy

FAMILY THERAPY

Family therapy is a type of psychological therapy (psychotherapy) that can help family members improve communication and resolve conflicts. Family therapy is usually provided by a psychologist, clinical social worker, or licensed therapist. These therapists hold undergraduate or graduate/Master's degrees. Family therapy is usually short term. You can involve all family members or only those who are able or willing to participate. Your specific treatment plan will depend on your family situation. Family therapy sessions can teach you skills to deepen family connections and get through stressful times, even after you're done going to therapy sessions.

Family therapy can help family members to cope if one of them has a serious mental condition such as schizophrenia, but the person with schizophrenia must continue with the individualized treatment plan which may include medication, personalized therapies or other treatment.

In the case of addictions, the family may attend family therapy while the person with an addiction participates in residential treatment. Sometimes the family can participate in family therapy, even when the person with an addiction did not seek treatment on their own.
