What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is one of the most widely used forms of psychotherapy. It is conducted in a structured manner, with a limited number of sessions in which you work with a mental health professional. Its goal is to help you identify inaccurate or negative thoughts so you can respond more clearly and effectively to challenging situations.
Mental health problems have two dimensions: an objective one, observed in behavior, and a subjective one, related to emotions and internal experiences. CBT intervenes at both levels, combining work with mental processes and changes in the patient's behavior and environment.
Its origins lie in the integration of behaviorism, based on scientific methodology and the measurement of outcomes (inspired by B.F. Skinner), with cognitive psychology, which values internal processes and subjective well-being. According to the Mayo Clinic, CBT can be used alone or in conjunction with other approaches to treat problems such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or eating disorders. However, it is also effective for those without a mental illness, as it teaches them to better manage stress and everyday difficulties. CBT is a practical and straightforward tool. It generally requires fewer sessions than other types of therapy and helps address specific challenges more quickly and effectively.

The characteristics of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and the models on which it is based, give it an advantage over other therapies. It is characterized by a systematic structure that begins with a functional analysis of behavior, where the therapist identifies the conditions and factors that originate and maintain the relationship between irrational thoughts and maladaptive behaviors.
